I am Moreno Moretti. I was born in Le Marche, and my team and I have planned trips across Italy since 2014. We publish the starting price of every itinerary we sell, so most numbers on this page come from trips we run. When a figure comes from someone else, I name the source.

How much does a trip to Italy cost per day?

From $60 in a hostel to over $1,100 with a private driver.

Most travelers spend between $100 and $1,100 per person per day in Italy, before flights. Italy works at every budget, from hostels and pizza al taglio to palace hotels and private boats.

Most of the gap between the comfortable and the private rows is people, not rooms. You pay for the driver who meets you at arrivals, the guide who gets you into the Vatican at opening time, and someone in Italy who finds you a new table when a restaurant closes without notice.

What do our 21 sample itineraries cost?

Starting prices, divided by the number of days.

Our published itineraries start between €1,900 and €8,500 per person, or €380 to €1,214 per person per day. The median is €536 a day, about $600. These are starting prices for the time on the ground. International flights are extra. I divided each starting price by the number of days.

Here is what the table shows.

The quieter regions are the cheapest. Le Marche, Calabria, Puglia and Piedmont fill the top rows, at €380 to €416 a day. I grew up in Le Marche. It has truffles, castles and the Adriatic coast, and hotels cost less because far fewer foreign visitors go there.

The trulli of Alberobello in Puglia, one of the regions where our days cost the least.

Longer trips cost less per day. Four of our five itineraries of 13 days or more come in under €500 a day. Airport transfers and other fixed costs are spread over more days, and you change hotels less often.

Short trips cost more per day. The six-day Sicily and Umbria itineraries fit several private experiences into a few days, so each day costs more. The Amalfi Coast by boat is the most expensive because both the boat and the coast are priced high.

How much does a trip to Italy cost for 2?

Two people share the room, the driver and the guide.

A 10-day trip to Italy for two costs about $6,000 to $6,600 in comfort with flights included, and about $12,400 to $28,800 for a private trip we arrange. The table assumes two people in one room and economy flights from the United States.

Two travelers rarely pay double. You share the room, the driver and the private guide. Solo travelers usually pay a single supplement at hotels, and a private guide costs the same for one person or two.

For couples, our Italy honeymoon cost guide breaks down three real budgets, from about $8,500 to $35,000 for 10 to 12 days.

Where does the money go on an Italy trip?

Hotels first, then people or trains.

Hotels take the largest share of an Italy budget. On a private trip, drivers and guides come next. On a self-planned trip, food and trains do. Here is what each item costs in 2026.

Flights. Economy tickets from the United States usually run $600 to $900 per person when booked three or four months ahead. Premium economy runs about $1,100 to $1,600 per person, and business class starts around $2,000. Flying into one city and home from another, Venice in and Rome out for example, rarely costs more and saves a day of backtracking.

Hotels. A good 4-star hotel runs about $150 to $250 per night. A 5-star hotel runs $500 to $1,000. The palace hotels on the Amalfi Coast, on Lake Como and in Venice start around $1,000 and pass $2,500 in summer. Location matters more than stars: a room of the same standard can cost $180 in Bologna and $450 in Positano.

Trains. The high-speed Frecciarossa from Rome to Florence costs from €19.90 booked early to about €55 for a flexible fare. Between the big cities, take the train.

Private drivers. On the Amalfi Coast and in the countryside of Tuscany, Umbria or Le Marche, a driver is often the only practical way to get around. Budget $800 to $1,500 for a 10-day trip that uses private transfers on the key days.

Food. Lunch at a good trattoria costs €15 to €25 per person with wine. Dinner at a very good restaurant costs €50 to €80 per person. A Michelin-starred dinner costs €150 to €300. Most travelers who eat well spend $50 to $75 per person per day.

Sights and experiences. The big museums are inexpensive by American standards. Most of the experience budget goes to private guides, cooking classes and boat days.

What are the 2026 entrance fees and taxes most budgets miss?

Small amounts, paid at the ticket desk or at checkout.

Italy now charges several small fees that rarely make it into a trip budget: the Trevi Fountain basin, the Venice access fee, city tourist taxes and, from late 2026 or 2027, the European ETIAS travel authorization. Each one is small. Most travelers find out about them at the ticket desk or at hotel checkout.

How much does the season change the price?

A lot on the coast, much less in the cities.

On the Amalfi Coast, Capri and the lakes, July and August cost 20 to 40 percent more than April, May, September and October. From November through the winter, many coastal hotels close, so the cheapest months are not an option there.

Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella, Lake Maggiore, with mountains behind
Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore. On the lakes, summer rates run well above spring and fall.

The season matters less in the art cities. Rome, Florence and Venice stay busy almost all year, and hotel rates there move less than on the coast.

For the best value, I suggest the first half of October. The sea is still warm in the south, the grape harvest is under way in Tuscany and Piedmont, and white truffle season opens in Le Marche and Piedmont.

Is $2,000, $5,000 or $10,000 enough for a trip to Italy?

What each budget buys, per person.

$2,000 per person covers a budget week in Italy without flights. $5,000 per person covers a comfortable 10-day trip with flights. $10,000 per person covers most private trips of 7 to 10 days, flights included.

$2,000 per person. Enough for 7 to 10 days at the shoestring or mid-range level if your flight is already paid, or for four or five comfortable days. It does not stretch to private drivers or 5-star hotels.

$5,000 per person. Enough for 10 comfortable days with economy flights and 4-star hotels. It also covers a short private trip: our Handcrafted Calabria journey starts at about $3,480 for eight days, which leaves room for flights.

$10,000 per person. Enough for most of our private itineraries with flights included. The Amalfi Coast boat week is the exception: at about $9,540 before flights, it needs a little more.

How can you save money on an Italy trip without cutting quality?

Change the region before you change the hotel.

The biggest saving comes from the region you choose. These five decisions change the total most.

  1. Swap one famous region for a quieter one. Four nights in Puglia or Le Marche instead of the Amalfi Coast keep the same hotel standard for much less.
  2. Travel in May, September or October. The weather is good and coastal hotels drop their summer rates.
  3. Choose two or three bases, not five. Every hotel change costs a transfer, half a day and often a higher rate for a short stay.
  4. Take the train between cities and keep the driver for the countryside. A train from Rome to Naples plus a short transfer costs much less than a car all the way to the Amalfi Coast.
  5. Book early for the coast and the lakes. For May to September, we book 6 to 9 months ahead, because the best small hotels in Positano and Florence sell out first.

How much does a bespoke trip with Italy Charme cost?

Our prices, published before you call us.

A bespoke trip with Italy Charme typically costs €500 to €1,000 per person per day, which is about $560 to $1,120. A 10-day journey usually ranges from €5,000 to €12,000 per person. The figure depends on the season, the hotels and the private experiences you choose.

We publish these numbers because you should know the cost of a trip before you talk to anyone. Every proposal lists each item, from hotels to drivers, so you can see where the money goes and change it.

Frequently asked questions

What our guests ask about money before they book.

Do US citizens need a visa to visit Italy?

No. US citizens can visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. From the last quarter of 2026, or possibly 2027, you will also need an ETIAS travel authorization, which costs €20 and stays valid for up to three years.

What is the cheapest time to visit Italy?

January, February and November are the cheapest months for the art cities, with lower hotel rates and short lines. On the coast, many hotels close from November to Easter, so the best value there is in May and October.

Is $1,000 enough for a week in Italy?

Only on a strict budget and without flights. $1,000 for seven days means about $140 a day, which covers hostels or simple rooms, regional trains and casual meals. It does not cover 4-star hotels or private tours.

How much spending money do I need per day in Italy?

If your hotels and transport are paid, plan about $50 to $75 per person per day for good meals, plus entrance tickets. Add more for wine dinners, shopping or a boat day.

Do your prices include international flights?

No. Our starting prices and bespoke quotes cover the trip in Italy. You book your own flights, and we plan the days around your arrival and departure times.

How far ahead should I book an Italy trip?

For peak season, from May to September, book 6 to 9 months ahead. For April or October, 3 to 4 months usually works. Book named museum tickets, such as the Colosseum, as soon as sales open.

So what should you budget? For 10 days, plan on $2,400 to $4,000 per person if you organize everything yourself, or $5,600 to $13,500 per person if we arrange it privately, plus $600 to $900 for flights. Choose the region before you look at hotels. Send me your dates and your budget, and a travel designer on my team will show you what it buys, item by item.
