Why travellers love it

This is the truffle trip I would plan for my own family. Five days, private from start to finish, beginning and ending at Bologna airport, with a morning in the woods of Le Marche beside a licensed truffle hunter and his dog. The white truffle season runs from October to December, and if you travel between 25 October and 15 November 2026 you can walk the International White Truffle Fair in Acqualagna, the town that trades more truffle than any other in Italy.

We stay in Urbino, the Renaissance city of Raphael and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and spend the days between the truffle woods, a family farm that makes its own cheese and olive oil, and the osteria tables where the truffle is shaved over fresh pasta. The last night is in Bologna, the food capital of Italy, so the trip ends where it began, at the table.

Day 1 · Bologna to Urbino, by way of San Marino

A representative meets you at Bologna airport for your private transfer into Le Marche. On the way we stop in San Marino, the hilltop microstate, for lunch and a walk along its walls. In the afternoon you arrive in Urbino, the walled Renaissance city where Raphael was born, and check into your hotel. Dinner tonight is your first taste of the local truffle.

Day 2 · Truffle hunt, lunch in Acqualagna and a family farm

We meet a licensed truffle hunter and his dog early in the morning for a walk through the oak and poplar woods. You watch the dog work, you see the hunter kneel and finish the dig with his small spade, and you learn why no two mornings are ever the same. Nothing is staged and nothing is guaranteed, which is exactly the point. Lunch is in an osteria in Acqualagna, the truffle trading capital of Italy, with the truffle shaved at the table. In the afternoon we visit the Beltrini family farm to taste their artisan cheeses and olive oil.

Day 3 · Urbino, Acqualagna and the truffle fair

A free day at your own pace. Walk the Ducal Palace and the streets of Urbino, or return to Acqualagna. Between 25 October and 15 November 2026 the town hosts the 61st International White Truffle Fair, with the truffle market, cooking shows and tastings on seven days: 25 and 31 October, and 1, 7, 8, 14 and 15 November. We plan your dates around the fair if you wish. Outside the fair season, the Furlo Gorge and its Roman tunnel on the Via Flaminia are a short drive away.

Day 4 · Return to Bologna

After breakfast your driver takes you back to Bologna for a night in the city that calls itself the capital of Italian food. The afternoon is yours for the porticoes, the old market streets around the Quadrilatero and a dinner of tortellini or tagliatelle al ragù.

Day 5 · Departure from Bologna

After breakfast you meet your private transfer to Bologna airport in time for your flight home.

Route in day order: Bologna, San Marino, Urbino and Acqualagna, then back to Bologna. Three nights in Urbino, one in Bologna.

When is the best time to go?

The white truffle season in Le Marche runs from 1 October to 15 January, and the best weeks for quality and choice are October and November. In 2026 the Acqualagna fair falls on 25 and 31 October and on 1, 7, 8, 14 and 15 November. The tour also runs in the other seasons, with the black winter truffle from December to March and the summer truffle from June to August. The woods are closed to hunting in September and May.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. Your transfers, your truffle hunt and your table are private to your party, and we shape the five days around your dates and your pace.

Can we plan the trip around the Acqualagna truffle fair?

Yes, and we recommend it. In 2026 the 61st International White Truffle Fair runs on 25 and 31 October and on 1, 7, 8, 14 and 15 November. Tell us your preferred dates and we place the free day in Acqualagna on a fair day.

Will we find a truffle?

Usually, but never certainly. The hunt is real, in woods the hunter knows, and nothing is planted for visitors. A morning with a small find, or none, is part of the honesty of the experience, and the truffle at lunch is guaranteed.

What does the price include, and is it per person?

The tour starts from 1,900 euros per person, including private transfers, four nights with breakfast, the welcome dinner, the truffle hunt, lunch in Acqualagna and the farm tasting. Prices are based on double occupancy in hotels of four stars or above. The final price depends on season, hotel category and the size of your party.

Can we add days to the tour?

Of course. Many guests add two nights on the Conero coast, a day in the Verdicchio vineyards or a longer stay in Bologna. Every Italy Charme journey is built around you.
