17 Bedrooms with Pool and Garden in Pignano
Borgo Castello and its crenulated ramparts have witnessed periods of plague, destruction, war, decadence and dissolution but also peace and prosperity. In the late 1700s, it was owned by the Incontris, a wealthy family of wool merchants. During the 19th century Marchese Ludovico Incontri turned it into a palatial country seat. He planted formal gardens and expanded the villa, where about 700 inhabitants lived with the noble family. The present owners restored the villa and the outbuildings and reclaimed the land. Extensive new infrastructure captures, stores and recycles rainwater for irrigation. The sun and wood harvested from the forest contribute to the community’s energy needs thanks to solar collectors and a biomass generator. Residents and guests can eat fresh eggs, meat, fruits and vegetables, seasonal truffles and taste the olive oil pressed from the trees in the garden.
This ancient borghetto consists of a villa with several suites and public spaces (a ballroom, a music room and a library) meticulously restored, a big swimming pool that has been carved from an old limestone quarry and the gardens that lead to long walks through forests and fields nearby. The villa offers an amazing view – looking west towards the Mediterranean sea and east towards Siena. Each of its 17 luxurious bedrooms is elegantly furnished with all the modern comforts and the 22 bathrooms blend gorgeous native stones and marble with gleaming, state-of-the art fixtures. In and out, the villa offers different interesting spots for intimate or festive gatherings. There are several public sitting rooms, a medieval banquet room, an entertainment room, an internal courtyard and two kitchens.
The main kitchen is only for the use of authorised staff. or for pre-arranged cooking lessons. The guests can use the kitchen on the ground floor. The villa has two dining rooms, a living room with sofas and large fioreplace, a large library with comfortable sofas, fireplace, tables and a billard room. The main laundry room is managed exclusively by villa’s staff, while guests can use the other small room with the laundry machine. In Borgo Castello there is a charming 18th century farmhouse, where you can see pigs, horses and dogs. The villa also has a kids entertainment room: a comfortable place for children with tables and DVD player where they can play or rest during warm hours in summer.
Near the main house there is a collection of stone farmhouses (beautifully reconfigured as apartments and duplex ateliers). Borgo Castello has a bohemian atmosphere and its rhythm of life echoes an old family estate – home to several generations – or of an artist’s colony, where guests are treated with great hospitality and can taste the most prestigious Tuscan wines or organic seasonal food. Borgo Castello is perfect for holidays but also for big events, parties, workshops, spiritual retreats and weddings in the heart of Tuscany.
